I've seen nothing that would indicate that a V5R1 upgrade (from V4R5)
would cause this.  Although normal problem solving would certainly
indicate that this is the cause.

Is it possible if the drive lost some of its configuration information
during your upgrade process?  Perhaps because it was powered off or the
microcode was reloaded?  If I'm recalling correctly, this is the
difference between 18-track and 36-track tapes.  Because not all models
provide write support for the older 18-track tapes, is it possible that
your hardware is being recognized as a different model?
