That's cool, except for one small problem.  I can get the columns to
"scrunch" together using this method but when I expand the width of the one
column that needs to be expanded, I still receive the error "Fixed size
LISTCOL tags will not fit in the layout width 78." but I can clearly see
that there's plenty of room now.  What gives?

Yes it is possible. Place the columns in a column group and specify a
column separator of 1.  The listgrp tag would look something like this
    :listgrp  col=COLID colsep=1.

Be sure to change the LISTVIEW tag to include the list group column id
instead of the names of the individual columns in the group.
