And from my experience, battery failures on disk IOP on a 170 are quite
common, and often go undetected by users (who don't have Service Director
running, don't check WRKPRB or QSYSOPR msgs, and don't check WRKDSKSTS,
F11 for the DEGRADED status).  So there actually are enough warnings.

The controller knows (somehow) when the battery is weak and disables use
of the cache
when this happens. It also reports at problem at this point so that you
know to call
service. If your Disk units get abnormally busy and the system very slow
then this is
one possibly condition. WRKPRB or QSYSOPR will both show the problem.
