Hi Konrad,

I got a little behind in my e-mail so I didn't see your posting from August
23rd until today. Some further information would be as follows:

1. Remote Output Queue - Conforms to RFC 1179 and sends data via classical
LPR transmission. Before any data can leave the IBM host, the OS/400
software must first convert the whole spool file from EBCDIC to ASCII,
second it calculates the file size in order to place this information into
the LPR control file, and then third it can finally begin sending data to
the target device.

2. DEVD for IPDS Printer - The IBM host opens a TCP socket connection to the
target printer and verifies that the printer supports the receipt of IPDS
data. If yes, printing begins immediately.

3. DEVD for an HP PCL Supporting Laser Printer - The System Driver Program
specified in the DEVD will be HPPJLDRV or IBMPJLDRV. The IBM host sends a
PJL based prologue to a defined TCP port on a target printer or print
server. If an appropriate PJL response is received from the target device,
the IBM host begins transforming the spool file from EBCDIC to ASCII and
transmitting the transformed data simultaneously. The time to first page
will be noticeably better than the Remote Output Queue.

4. DEVD for all ASCII Printers - The System Driver Program specified in the
DEVD will be IBMSNMPDRV. The IBM host contacts the Public MIB on the target
printer or print server via the SNMP protocol. If an appropriate response is
received from the target device, the IBM host begins transforming the spool
file from EBCDIC to ASCII and transmitting the transformed data
simultaneously. The time to first page will be noticeably better than the
Remote Output Queue.

HTH

Best Regards,

/Paul
