The default order of how files display in a folder is controlled by the
setting last used....For example, if you clicked the bar at the top of the
SIZE column, it will sort in order by ascending size. If you then click
SIZE again, it will display descending order by size. If you exit the
folder and go back, it will still be the way that you last viewed it
(descending by size).

Also, check the settings under Tools > Folder Options > View:

Here you can click the "Like Current Folder" button to set all folders to
use the same view as folder that you are currently viewing.

Subject: Default file order in Windows folders

Here's an odd and completely off the wall issue. As of a few days ago, the
folders on my Windows 2000 workstation started acting differently. Up until
that time, if I opened a folder and changed the view to List or Details, the
default order was by name. Now, the default order is by size, of all
things, and it's really annoying.

Is there a registry setting somewhere that determines the default order of
displaying files in a directory? I've searched the 'Net and found nothing.
I know this isn't really midrange related, but I know there's a wealth of
experience with workstations out there, and any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Joe
