I think the 2771 is only an async modem, mostly for PPP dial up
applications. I am pretty sure it does not support sync protocols like
BSC or SNA.

Subject: External modem on 2771 card not working

I took a 7852 modem that was connected to a V.24 port on a 2609 card in
our storage rack and connected it to a 2771 comm port on our 820 iSeries
with a PCI cable. I kept the line description and just changed resource
name for the new modem connection.

When I try to use the modem (for SNADS in this case), I get the
following
error:

42001274 -- V.25 - Data line occupied (DLO) was not detected after
raising call request (CRQ), or DLO did not drop after dropping CRQ.
V.25bis - Clear to send (CTS) was on before Data terminal ready (DTR)
was raised, CTS was not detected after raising DTR, or CTS fell before
the dial sequence was sent.

Do I need to change the line description? Or dip switches?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
