Peter,

The following quote is from the V4R2 System Handbook in the section
related to the 170: "There is no support for external disk on the Model
170 nor can previous models of internal disk be migrated from other
AS/400s." (p 78)

In addition, there are no "disk unit kits" listed as being available for
the 170. These kits are the brackets which someone is selling on eBay.
The kits are listed for the 6xx models which were announced at the same
time as the 170s. It is possible that IBM chose not to list such kits
because there is no MES upgrade from a previous model to a 170. It is
also possible that you just can't get there from here. The 620 and 720
machines can have both PCI and SPD buses, so it is difficult to draw
parallels between these machines and the 170, which is PCI only.

I would be extremely hesitant unless you can get confirmation from
somewhere that the specific kits which are for sale would work. Also
bear in mind that there are dozens of different kinds of kits, each
designed to convert a particular kind of disk to another. If they are a
reputable vendor and are willing to accept returns if it doesn't work,
then it might be worth a try, but I would not feel good about it.

Regards,
Andy Nolen-Parkhouse
