JMO, but IBM midrange has traditionally been very supportive of non-degreed
programmers.  Many companies seem to have some sort of migration path from
system operations to programming, with most of these candidates being
mentored within IT department.  I remember reading some years ago that
programmers without degrees were actually earning more than their degreed
counterparts, simply because of the extra years of experience.  (That was
from one of Nate Viall's Salary Surveys.)
