I have found the additional URLs to contain interesting information:
http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnv.htm
http://www.ssa.gov/employer/evs2000.html

It's interesting to note that the "123" range is assigned to New York. It is
not inconceivable that a 133-xx-xxxx number might be issued. It is also not
unusual for the SSA to reuse Social Security numbers from deceased
individuals.

It does not appear the SSA offers "real-time" electronic verification.

Subject: SSN Validity Checking

Listers-

Does anyone know of a way to check a Social Security Number for validity?
(I.E. - A clerk enters an SSN on a screen and we want to be sure that the
clerk didn't enter '123-45-6789' or some such nonsense.)

Thanks (and yes, it probably should be on the RPG list but I don't
subscribe to that! :-) ),

Steve
