Were your physical files externally defined?  I get the following:

Data PF - created with CRTPF ROB/GREPTEST RCDLEN(100)
grep -c 'Hoosier' /QSYS.LIB/ROB.LIB/GREPTEST.FILE/*.MBR

$

Data PF - CREATE TABLE ROB/GREPTEST3 (MYFIELD CHAR (100 ) NOT NULL WITH
DEFAULT)
grep -c 'Hoosier' /QSYS.LIB/ROB.LIB/GREPTEST3.FILE/*.MBR
grep: 001-0023 Error found opening file
/QSYS.LIB/ROB.LIB/GREPTEST3.FILE/GREPTEST3.MBR. Operation not supported.
