I found the answer to my own question....
the problem comes when you tell it to autostrwtr this just leaves the
defaults with no msgq and the default message type is *nomsg

We just installed a new IBM 6400 IP printer and it does not seem to be
sending messages to the Operator for a forms change, Why?
we configured it using the CRTOUTQ method with 1 autostart writer.
Is there anything we can do to make it send inquiry messages?
also the os is V5r1 if that makes any difference....

Also here is the crtoutq setup that we used
CRTOUTQ OUTQ(QUSRSYS/QPRINT4) RMTSYS(*INTNETADR) RMTPRTQ('d1prn')
AUTOSTRWTR(1)
CNNTYPE(*IP) DESTTYPE(*OTHER) MFRTYPMDL(*IBM6400EP) INTNETADR
('172.16.2.60') DES
TOPT('XAUTO XAIX')
