When the Royal Bank of Canada switched from continuous labels to cut sheet
labels, they ended up paying US$500 for a die (one time charge) and US$200
per 5000 labels.  Now they can print 3x5" labels, one per page, at 20 pages
per minute, with barcodes on their Ethernet attached laser printer.  Since
the Lexmark has two bins, it can also print 8.5x11 plain bond from bin 2.

The only advantage of thermal printers is that smaller labels may be cheaper
(IMHO).
