SMTP relay versus direct delivery

I am attempting to send email from the AS/400 to recipients outside our
organization (bwauto.com). In the SMTP attributes, I set our Exchange server
as the mail router. Our AS/400 is not connected directly to the internet.
However, it appears that the AS/400 is trying to deliver the mail directly.
I got an email (internally) from QGATE telling me it could not resolve the
external hostname for delivery. I thought the AS/400 whould hand all email
messages to our Exchange server for delivery. Is there another SMTP setting
I can check?
