We do to.  As we switch over, 2 days to update all the PCs, we only had a
couple of problems.

   You are correct about the PING working. Sometimes. The OS/400 DHCP server
does this too. The problem is this: I turn on my PC, and get address
x.x.x.123. Your PC is configured statically for that address but it's not
currently turned on. When you turn yours on, one of us gets clobbered. If
you leave all your PCs on this is clearly less of an issues.

   Because of this we always attempt to keep static assignments outside the
DHCP address.
