A very cursory search in the archives reveals that this has been asked and
answered very recently.  The address of the archives at the bottom of every
message.  Select the MIDRANGE-L archive, and then use the words "validation
list API" to search.  I haven't got code I can share, sorry.

If you haven't got web access, Doug Pence and Ron Hawkins did a piece on
these in Midrange Computing, Nov 1999, page 97.
