First off, Linus and ESR should not be compared to each other.  ESR is an
outright megalomaniac prick.  He is actually doing more to put tears in the
Open Source community than none else.

Second, no one is forced to work on it.  The several thousand developers
could just stop writing code.  No harm no foul.  Hell, Alan Cox himself is
backing down because he just doesn't want to be that involved anymore.
