I think it was because they are initialize values. When I moved the
equivalent logic to the mainline (initialize HASHWORKAREA to x'00' and
HASHCTXPTR to the address of HASHWORKAREA), just before calling CIPHER, the
program works correctly every time.

The 'hashworkarea' should be set to zero EVERY time you call CIPHER if
you are using the 'only' sequence (x00). How that causes the pointer to
become NULL I don't know.
