Geez Brad, I wouldn't wish that on Bill Gates! :-)

I do some account style maintenance via CGI (only so I can do it from
anywhere), but I would never sell something like that to clients. Even with
a LOT of scripting and such HTML simply isn't viable for data entry
intensive applications. I can't really speak for Servlets/JSP, but I'd have
to assume that the same problems exist since the presentation layer is still
basically HTML.

So, does this mean that web-facing is a joke? I guess it would depend on
the application.[/aside]

More to the point, I don't think the green screen is dead, just like the S36
isn't dead. Just like RPGII isn't dead. Star Wars (the original) had great
special effects, but Industrial Light and Magic would be laughed out of the
industry if they were still using the same techniques and such... doesn't
mean I won't watch the movie <vbg>.

Green Screens will linger, and some new development will continue. As an
ISV, we have to be all things to all clients, so as long as they want Green
Screen we'll write software for it. At the same time, I won't lose any
sleep over developing and marketing a PC Style GUI application that simply
doesn't care where the DB resides because that's what our prospective
clients demand, and let's face it they call the shots.

Eventually, our Green Screen users will migrate towards the PC, and so the
inevitable march of technology continues.

Joel
