Well, I hate it when people hock their wares out here, but that is an
opening wide enough to drive a space shuttle through.

Our GENTRAN:Server, GENTRAN:Server Communications Module, and
CONNECT:Mailbox products can all do 3780 bisync. You would still need an
application for the Series/1, still need to know what the S/1 needs to see
on the line, and still probably end up learning about OS/400 communications
trace, however, any product such as these would significantly reduce the
programming needed on the AS/400 side.

I seem to recall that there were AS/400 BSC 3780 programs available from
third parties (many EDI providers used 3780). This may be your best bet and
someone on the list may know who sells them.
