Invalid screen characters


On writing a screen from a COBOL program I get the following message after the
program crashes:


Data sent to device QPADEV0005 not valid.  Negative response code is
  10050111.

I have fields which contain characters that are not displayable - How can I
avoid this error ? -
Is there some keyword I can code into the screen DDS to allow these characters
to be displayed

(the same data file containing these characters does not crash
when accessed via WRKDBF)
