Well, now I can't figure out how to call the SP I just created.  I want to
call it from SQL Server's Query Analyzer, like this:
CALL ABQSYS/SP_DATA_AREA_READ ('TRANSDEV', 'TRLCNTL')
maybe, but that doesn't work.  Exec doesn't work either.

Stored procedures are the best answer.  I was thrown by your statement:

"only physical and logical files can be queried"

I thought that perhaps this was some sort of design constraint ("Thou Shalt
Not Use Stored Procedures").  I should have asked in more detail.  Sorry.
