Neil,
I'm sorry that this is not the help you are looking for, but your post
brings to mind some old memories (ca. 1990):

"One feature of the AS/400's on-line education program is the bookmark
function. You can set a bookmark when you exit an education module.
Then, when you return to the module with the STREDU command, you can
begin at the last bookmark you set. The system keeps only one bookmark
per student.
One its surface, the bookmark is a nice feature, but in reality you pay a
high
premium in wasted disk space when you use the function. For every user
profile that issues the STREDU command, on-line education adds
physical file member to file QAEABKMT is QUSRSYS. Initially the member
contains no records, but when a student sets a bookmark, the system writes
453 physical records and 12,547 deleted records to the member. The
bookmark costs you 1.09 megabytes - more than one megabyte of which
consists of deleted records"
