IMHO, anytime you bypass the multiple layer approach of isolation
between application, OS, services and hardware you create a threat to
system integrity.

This is what makes the system rock solid.  Look at the delays in the PC
world that have been created by the move from 32 to 64 bit.  Big Blue
made the change at the hardware level and we, the software community,
had to do nothing.

Magic.

You want to do bare metal programming, you're on your own.  Just like
the PC world.  And don't even try to tell me that Wintel has been
totally open with their technical specifications.  You can get to it. 
Don't expect it to be spoon fed to you.
