The S/38 was completely open. The microfiche was only
$2,000 (albeit a sizable amount in 1976).
I believe the AS/400 became closed partly because IBM did
not want to admit that it really was just a S/38. More or less
the same thins that is happening between the iSeries and
the AS/400 today.
I have it on good authority that the MI-manual for V5R1
will be available online shortly. This does not go far
enough because the MI-manual is heavily edited
in favor of hiding the important stuff, but it is maybe
a beginning. Or (the cynic tlaks) maybe because IBM
thinks it is irrelevant by now.
