See if you have a HOSTS.SAM file.  This is the sample host file that MS ships with Win9x and has the comments as in Peter's reply.
 
There is nothing magical about a host name in your local HOSTS file.  It is only an easy-to-remember name reference to the actual IP address. Just as you can have several different name listings in the telephone directory for the same telephone number so it is with host names in the HOST file. When the number is dialed it rings to the same phone no matter which name listing was used to get the number.
