So they decided they could get a better return on their investment for
their shareholders by selling drugs down at the local schoolyard and arms
to terrorists ? ;-)

I don't really want to start a new discussion on this, but it appears that
these days the corporate world has lost any sense of community or
responsibility (especially to employees) that existed years ago. Now
everything is motivated by pure greed (profits not BIG enough), outrageous
compensation packages for mediocre narrow-minded executives, and
"long-range" planning that doesn't extend beyond the retirement date of
the current chariman/president. You know - the type of short sighted
decisions that most politicians (who usually don't care much beyond the
next election) have been famous for for years. It's this type of
corporate behaviour that's giving rise to the resurgence of unions.

It's more a reflection of the way society in general has gone downhill
over the past several decades.
Not that I in any way condone the mindless violence of the hard core
radicals (criminals !), but I can certainly understand the concerns of
these anti-globalisation protesters.

Anyway - that's my two cents worth. If anyone wants to debate this, let's
take it offline.

Bill,

I thought this post by Shannon was interesting. Apparently
their still making money.....better than the competition.
It sounds like GREED to me :-(

Reeve,

I always enjoyed Midrange Computing and I can understand your frustration
with IIR for shutting them down. However, the reality of business today
is
that businesses sometimes lose money and eventually have to close the
doors. Many of us have (or know of others who have) experienced this
harsh
fact of business today firsthand. Consider all the "dot.com's" that have
shut down in the last year. It's no fun for employees and its no fun for
employers either.

Maybe IIR could have handled the situation differently, although we don't
know the particulars, only the result. I suspect that the people at IIR
are not weasels and probably thought long and hard about the realities of
their business. Being a decisionmaker is not always fun nor easy.

Bill
