"a solution that addresses the problem" -- any suggestions?  Breaking them
up (assuming you could prevent collusion between the new companies) would
seem to address the problem of MS application developers having unfair
insiders knowledge of the OS, especially if OS disinformation is being given
to competitors.

What's your opinion of the breakup of Ma Bell into Bell operating companies?
Anyone? Are we better off or worse off? I see it as a similar problem --
there was an argument for leaving them one company, i.e. better integration
of services. Is Bell still a monopoly? Well, there's a lot more competition
in the telco department nowadays.  Is integration worse than if Bell were
still in charge? Maybe, but on the other hand, there's a lot more new
technology out there to deal with too.
