Ditto, Chuck's comment. Also you can turn off preview so you can delete
(and/or view the properties) of messages, such as spam, without opening
them.

I guess it depends on your email client, but whenever someone sends me a
message like this, my client pops up a message box asking whether or not I
want to let them know I've read it.  (I have bowed to market pressure and
use a M$ product...)
