Tim,

Do you have any performance management tools installed?  If so, do they shed
any light on what is running on the system at the time?

Have you had any application updates lately?  Perhaps a program is getting
in a tight loop.  This can make it difficult to even get the console signed
on (it will happen, but it might take an awfully long time) - especially if
the program is being run in a high priority (e.g. interactive) job.
