Hmm...

I regularly download files with over a million records using CA file
transfer.  The only problem with Excel that I know of is the 64K row limit.
Otherwise I'd recommend using the Excel add in that comes with CA.  

What version of CA and Excel are you using, and what is your output format?
If you're trying to download in Excel format, there may be a limit to the
size that's smaller than the current one since CA supports some older Excel
formats.  

You could download in DIF, CSV, or tab delimited form.  If the 284K record
file needs to be imported to Excel, you or your supplier will need to break
it into smaller pieces at some point.  Bill Gates did make some remark about
640K being enough for anyone that seems to apply here, although in this case
enough is a bit smaller. <g>
