True enough.  Either focus works.  And I, in fact, started out along the
path you were going until I realized that there was a basic "pattern" (to
use the OO sense of the word) to all tagged formats.  I decided to back off
a level and look at it abstractly, and I realized that if I created a set of
flexible wrappers ("decorators" in OO terms) for the data, I could then
provide the HTML and XML authors with convenience classes that relieved them
of the grunt portion of their work.

We'll see what happens with my direction.  It's definitely an outgrowth of
my continued work in Java; the OO techniques make it much easier.  Of
course, as we've discussed many times, anything I can do in Java can be done
in any other language.  But Java is allowing me to do things I don't think I
would have attempted in RPG.
