Another thing that we have done here to think about is using windows95/98,
there is
a mail box manager to admin mail, you can create a mail box on a shared
directory -
we have it on a NT box right now, you add e-mail accounts, and the "old"
windows
messenger works fine with it (so does outlook2000 which we are currently
using on
our desktops now) If you do not have win95 cd's it is on the win98
install/upgrade
under another directory tools/oldwin95/message/us/wms.exe - this will get
messaging on you desktop (for free!!!) And so is the Microsoft mail
postoffice
icon on your control panel (if installed with windows 95/98)

Now this gives all the users a central "address book", this is free, so you
cannot
set-up distribution lists (we have 80 accounts on it here, but it seems to
get flaky
after 50; though no one has told me there is a limit)

With regards to the AS/400, I did play with ours as being the POP and SMTP
server
and using messenger and outlook on the desktop - it did work, but our 400 is
already
overloaded, so I turned it off. You just add as a service on the desktop.
The "bad" thing is you get many other "user profiles" that you really do not
want
to show, so you would have much cleaning up to do with the directory
listing - or
at least we would have a lot to do here.

Keep your mind open, there are many other free "PC" solutions out there too,
depending
on how your network is set-up.

Neil,

The shared address book capability requirement is the hard part.

If you use Client Access's IMAP e-mail support I believe you can use the
system directory as the central address book. I haven't done this, though,
so you'll have to read up on it.

Otherwise, to have a central address book, you'll need Domino or a non-IBM
solution (perhaps a non-as/400) solution. Check www.stalker.com. There
e-mail server runs on an as/400 and is supposedly very inexpensive and easy
to use. It may offer a centralized address book.

I've been using the POP and SMTP servers on the AS/400 for years. The only
complaint from users is the lack of a central address book. (There are
others from the system operators).

Back around 1997 IBM used to ship Lotus Mail with Client Access. Is
anyone using that ? Is it still shipped with Client Access ?
Anyone have any recommended solution for a small 400 account that wants
internal email only, using the 400 as POP and SMTP server, and wanting an
email client with a small footprint (to use on some old PC's) - and
requiring shared address book capability ?
