Try this syntax:

UPDATE filename
  SET item = '6' || substr(item,2,??)

Stan

Subject: SQL - how to update first byte of field

Using SQL, can I modify the first byte of an alpha field without affecting
the rest of the field?

Something like:

runsql 'update FILENAME set substr(item,1,1) = ''6''

I cannot get past the syntax errors with this command.

Thanks!
