DRDA is the way to get it done.  The "hitch" is that you need to get the 
DRDA drivers for the DBMS that you are trying to access.  For example:

Microsoft, use the OLE DB Provider for AS/400 & VSAM

ORACLE, use Oracle Access Manager for AS/400 
http://technet.oracle.com/doc/gateways/am4as400/toc.fm.html 
(looks like you have to signup, which is free)

SYBASE, use Direct Connect for AS/400
