This sounds correct since the field has to be null capable and I can't think
of how to define a null capable field on a d-spec. What if you created a
file with a null capable field and defined it as an external data structure?

I *think* that you cannot use %nullind on a field if it is described in the
program.
Embedded SQL in RPG has several unpleasant limitations. Can you use an SQL
stored procedure instead?
