Thanks a lot to you and to all who have answered

I have imported only the objects (of the PF and the LF) to the ADM project and it is OK now...I only have a few programs depending on external files ( with no source) and it is easy to keep track on them.

Kind regards

Heba

This ready made package ... do you have a contract with the supplier such
that they will be sending you upgrades from time to time, and obviously you
do not want to create a nightmare of how do we combine ... this program this
file we modified & they also modifying in the upgrade.

The missing source ... does your contract with the software supplier permit
you legal access to replacement, in other words is it gone due to some past
accident at your employer, or is it not there because supplier not allow you
to have it in the first place?

If you have the DDS from which logical files are created, then that IS the
source code for those logical files.

SQL can also be used to create logical files - it is possible that a file was
created one way & you are looking in another way & not finding where it came
from because you not realize this.

DSPFFD file name = layout information without needing access to the source

It is potentially not good 400 productivty to be creating & deleting logical
files on a daily basis, unless there is a problem with the sheer size of the
files, high volume of members, high volume of logicals.  You need to do an
evaluation of this ... why are these logicals being killed start of day &
recreated end of day?  Why not have them on-line permanently?

This is an approach that made sense on an architecture prior to the 400, so
this might be old software converted say from 36 & not rewritten to use the
strengths of the 400.

You need to know exactly what the logicals are used for before modifying
their behavior or using something else.

OPNQRYF is very powerful but IBM will not be further enhancing it.
Basically this uses some CL to specify what records are to be selected from
what files & in what sequences & then when it is fed into the RPG program,
the RPG program processes the data exactly the same as processing a regular
PF or LF except the contents have been populated on the fly based on some
parameters in a prompt screen.

SQL embedded in RPG is conceptually similar.
At time of execution of program you can have what is to be selected in what
sequence based on various parameters such as calculated 2 weeks ago from
today date when this was actually run.
