Scott, I agree with all your comments. 

However, IBM's problem with the AS/400 is that its high end 
is a threat to z-series, its low-end is a threat to x-series, and 
on the midrange it's a threat to p-series. 

Get this:
IBM wants the box to die, preferably slowly and painfully so that
maximum dollars can be extracted from the faithful with a fat
bonus thrown in from all the green-screeners that can't go
elsewhere.

Sad, but (I think) true.
