John,
I agree with Joe. My former boss back in Denmark (circa 1967)
with whom I wrote the RC4000 operating system (Per Brinch
Hansen) has just written a very readable book:
"Programming for Everyone in Java" ISBN 0-387-98683-9

Even I learnt something from it !
But, hey, I'm easy. When you at rock-bottom on a subject
there is only one way and that is UP.
