A problem with Java is that it is too special. It used to be
on the AS/400 that any program written in any language
could call any other program written in any (possibly different)
language. Isn't that partly what ILE means? (Integrated
Language Environment?). 
Not so with Java. It is a second-class (pun intended) 
citizen that does not integrate well.

Wouldn't it be lovely if you could write a program in
the language that was most convenient or natural
or matching-your-skill-set or (...) and have that program
be usable from any other program? Just as it was
in the pre-Java days.
