  Just wanted to let everyone know I got the opnqryf to work thanks for
everyones help. I had to define the date by mapping it with the substring
and digits

  OPNQRYF    FILE((ECDX)) QRYSLT('SHPDTE *EQ +
               %RANGE("' *CAT &LOWDTE *CAT '" "' *CAT +
               &HIDTE *CAT '") *AND CXWHSE *EQ ( "' *CAT +
               AU *CAT '")') KEYFLD((CXBOL#)) +
               MAPFLD((SHPDTE '%SST(%DIGITS(CXSHDT) 5 2) +
               || %SST(%DIGITS(CXSHDT) 1 4)' *CHAR 6))

I haven't had a chance to test this, but you can theoretically change the
date in the file to alpha, substring it, and reconcatenate it to make them
YYMMDD. Then just make sure your comparison dates are in YYMMDD as well.

%SST(%DIGITS(datfld) 5 2) || %SST(%DIGITS(datfld) 1 4) = %RANGE(000301
010228)

Note that this particular technique will only work if both dates in your
range are in the same millenium - either both BEFORE 010100 or both AFTER
010100.
