It's close. Al Mac* was hitting on the same idea.

Is it as simple as calculating the product of Block Length and File Length,
then summing all of those up? Then subtracting that sum from the listed tape
capacity?

I.e., does BlockLength * FileLength = number of tape bytes taken?

Does tape hardware compression need to be considered when dealing with those
numbers?

/pseudo-code:
DSPTAP *LABELS
CPYSPLF the DSPTAP output, capture the Block Length and File Length for each
label, calculate product and accumulate "TotalBytesSavedOnTape".

Calculate tape's listed capacity to the byte level (i.e., 10GB = 10 * 1024 *
1024 * 1024) and subtract "TotalBytesSavedOnTape" from that to get the
remaining space on the tape.
/end of pseudo-code

Seems too easy - if this works, someone should have published this before now.

The closest I can come to a method for finding how much tape you have left,
would be to use the OUTPUT parms on your save commands. Output them to a
file, which you can than either download into EXCEL or use Query to do your
math. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but I think it might
be the closest (easy) way to find the information that you want....
