Hello Robert,

PL/1 for AS/400 is still available but only as a PRPQ. I ordered it
recently and installed it on VRM440. So far it seems fine. The PRPQ number
is 5799-GCG and is at level VRM420.

If you have 2924-English as your primary language you can install it simply
with the RSTLICPGM command. If you have something else then you need to
either add QSYS2924 to your library list or copy the compiler command, help
panel group, and message file to QSYS after you install it.

A PRPQ (Programming Request for Price Quotation) is the last in a line of
IBM products which starts with LPP (Licensed Program Product), then LPO
(Licensed Program Offering), then PRPQ. As you move further down the line
you get less support from IBM -- no bug fixes, no NLS, no enhancements, etc.

Although PL/1 is still available you should not bank on it always being
available -- I believe IBM have announced an end date or last OS/400
version. Of course if more people ordered and used the PRPQ we might stand
a chance of getting it back to full LPP status and get it updated to full
PL/1 rather than the subset we've been suffering, and perhaps get an ILE
version too. What need for C, COBOL, or RPG IV with PL/1 .... but I digress
... :)

The only reason PL/1 exists for the AS/400 is because General Motors were
considering moving to the S/38 way back in the long-long-ago and required
PL/1. IBM created the compiler then GM changed their mind.

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
