A loooong time ago, I did some searching through the Big List of manuals and
Redbooks. Not limiting myself to the AS/400 manuals, I mean. If it were
almost anybody else, I'd suggest trying to hunt down a *nix version of the
AFP driver or find a friend who runs Windows.

AFP manuals:
Bar Code Object Content Architecture Reference S544-3766-02 (-03 is a PDF)
Font Object Content Architecture (FOCA) Reference S544-3285-03 (-04 is a
PDF)
Graphics Object Content Architecture for Advanced Function Presentation
Reference S544-5498-00
Image Object Content Architecture Reference SC31-6805-03
Mixed Object Document Content Architecture Reference SC31-6802-04
Presentation Text Object Content Architecture Reference SC31-6803-02

The various Printing Redbooks can be helpful as can the IPDS books:
Intelligent Printer Data Stream Reference S544-3417-05

I have done some tinkering - nothing more than that, alas.
