Save While Active

I have been using save while active for a number of years without problem.
I recently was given a white paper which stated if you do not journal then
you should not be using save while active.

Can anyone validate this statement or is it safe to use save while active
without journaling.

Also, is anyone using Robot/Save and is it a good product for providing save
and restore.
