I think readabilty as a lot to do with it. When reading numeric dates
my mind (or at least the voice in my head!) instantly translates them as
"2nd of March 2001"
and "March the 2nd 2001" rarely features unless the math doesn't compute.

I suppose I'm naturally conditioned to read left to right.

When reading US dates I have to page in/out a little more to get
my English equivalent.

If anyone reads mm/dd/yyyy format dates in English as "2nd of March 2001"
then you have read dd followed by mm by yyyy which is a repositioning
of the eye across the string. My guess is they are read as "March the 2nd
2001".

I could be wrong and this is just a theory!

And whilst we're at - why don't everyone drive on the same side of the
road as us Brits?

I think if everyone just used mm/dd/yyyy format, there wouldn't be an issue
.... 02/03/2001 can only mean one thing....
