Would it be possible to change the message description, CHGMSGD, and add a
DFTPGM to perform an action based on the halt? If your system is in such a
restricted state could an action be performed? Such an action might be,
page someone to fix the tape.

Or use a secondary method. Have another PC or 400 test your machine for
connectivity, after the allotted time for the backup. If it cannot connect
then page someone. The problem with this method is if your backup takes 10
hours and it dies in the first hour, then you've lost 9 hours of
productivity.

I would suggest that if you do follow Neil's suggestion that you turn the
maximum job logging on and evaluate the joblog each time you run this.

In CL program near the start do a CHGJOB INQMSGRPY(*DFT).
This will cause the "Change tape" message to take a "C" reply, and your
program will regain control and bring the system back up.

I have a situation where I am running a dedicated backup from the console:
ENDSYS
SAVSYS
SAVLIB *NONSYS
SAVDLO
SAV
STRSBS QCTL

If any of the commands fail, the program that I have written starts the
required subsystems and sends a pager message to the support guys. They can
then come in, fix the problem and restart the backup.

I have one problem, if the save runs out of cartridges the message 'load
next volume...' is sent and the save waits for it to be answered. Because
an
error hasn't occurred, my program does not know it is waiting and so no
pager message is sent.

This shouldn't be a problem because the device is a 3590 with a cartridge
stacker, however this weekend the stacker had a hardware failure and didn't
load the next cart and the save hung waiting for a response for 10+
hours!!!

Does anybody know a way round this.

Many thanks

Alan
