First off, a CLOF and OPNDBF will not work after your program has received
CPF0864.  Once CPF0864 has been issued, you cannot re-read the file in that
occurance of the program.

As someone else mentioned, counting the number of records is also a risky
prospect.... you've got to be pretty darn sure that no one else is adding or
deleting records from te file.  It's also more work than the alternatives.

The method that I have used to accomplish this is to use the TFRCTL command. A
program can do a TFRCTL to itself, and a new occurance of the program is fired
off which allows you to read your file after CPF0864.  It's pretty painless , 
and
it allows you to accomplish your goal with one code base.

The other method that works is to not rely on the CL to do your DB reads....  
use
a HLL program to handle that and communicate the results back to your CL via
parms.
