Well, true. I have done TCP/IP before. I do know C extensively.
I do know communications programming. And I've done a similar
program on another platform (PC).

Hmm... if there seems to be such a big need for this, and I even use
FTP in my shop for a daily transmission, perhaps I should just go ahead
and write the AS/400 command line client and make it open source.

Okay, sounds like a plan. Do not expect it any time soon as I have
many other projects I'm working on, but it will be done, especially
when I find a real world need for it (will be able to justify my time).

Oh, rats, I can't make it open source, since I'll be doing in on my
companies computer on my companies time. Guess I'll have to talk to
my boss about that one.

Regards,

Jim Langston

Well then Jim I have to say you are a better and faster programmer than I.
I went with the third party approach. Could not justify the time I
estimated. Having never done TCP/IP it took me 2 month to write a TCP/IP
socket client, about 2 weeks was specific to the application and the other 6
weeks to the communications. After that it took me 2 month to write a
TCP/IP socket server. I had to learn how to translate C to RPG for the
Prototypes. Most RPG programmers on the AS400 that I know, don't now C or
Communication programming. Perhaps someone else can do it faster and others
will need more time. How many know how to find the RFC's or even what they
are? For a Socket Guru that knows both C and RPG I guess they would need
less time. Also how many people can work on one thing at a time. Please
let me know, I would apply in an instant.
