Kenneth,

I can attest that the balancing can be run on a live system, we have it on
our job scheduler to run it every Wednesday evening. (We run the trace
during the busy hours of our working days, then tell it to do the arm
utilization balance in that Wednesday run.) However, it's never actually
had to do any balance adjustments, since we haven't added any disk since we
went to V4R4 and there haven't been any radical changes in our usage
patterns.

We also run the STRDSKRGZ regularly, which is basically a free space
defragmenter. It runs an hour or two each night on our machine (720 207A
with 146 GB in 8 GB drives with RAID). There's probably no great benefit to
running this, either, since we stay between 55 and 70% of capacity all the
time, but "running a defrag tool" is a good security blanket for my
management, which is only semi-AS/400 literate (long-time Burroughs shop,
moved to NT and AS/400).

Has anyone added disk on V4R4 or V4R5 and used the new disk balancing
processes? I understand that they can balance disk in the background while
the system is open to users.
