Rob, it sounds like you're using an externally-described file.  What you're
doing is easy with a program-described file.  It's not possible with an
externally-described file.  The compiler decides how to move the buffer to
the fields based on the record format; even if the compiler allowed the
unknown format without an error, none of your input fields would be changed
by the read.
